Reasons to enjoy Santiago Centro with the whole family
The Historic Center is the neighborhood where the city was born and, over the centuries, has become the administrative, political, cultural and financial heart of Santiago.
Currently, this sector stands out for concentrating the largest amount of the city's heritage; the excellent connectivity with the rest of the metropolitan area; an attractive offer of commerce housed in its galleries, shopping malls and pedestrian walkways such as Ahumada and Huérfanos; in addition to the intense activity that takes place in its streets, where more than a million people circulate daily to work, study, live or visit Santiago.
The design of Santiago, as well as its checkerboard layout, defined in its center the Plaza Mayor, today Plaza de Armas, and from there were projected the blocks that housed houses and the main buildings, such as the Casas de Cabildo, today Municipality of Santiago; the Real Audiencia where the National Historical Museum is located; the House of the Governors and Presidents, today Central Post Office; and the building of the Real Aduana that today houses the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, one block away from the Plaza.
Since then, it has been growing and during this expansion, the Civic Neighborhood of Santiago was created, a reflection of the growing modernization that Chile experienced in the early twentieth century. The creation of this neighborhood was in charge of the Viennese urban planner Karl Heinrich Brunner, during the government of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, and its design responded to the need to reduce the growing national unemployment through public works.
During the 20th century, the Historic Center suffered the progressive exodus of families to other sectors of the capital, and the houses were transformed into offices and stores. This process began to be reversed during the last decades of the last century, through a policy of urban renewal that generated a boom in the construction of apartment buildings that brought families back to downtown Santiago.
For all these reasons and many more, visiting the historic center of Santiago de Chile is a must to enjoy with family and friends, learn more about the essence of our country and live unforgettable experiences. That is why staying at Hotel Plaza San Francisco is an excellent option within this panorama, which offers one of the best locations to walk through the best tourist spots of the city, in addition to offering a complete experience with a first class service.
